I Still Believe English Is Important...

I REFER to the letter “Make BM a world class language” (The Star, Oct 17) in which the writer lamented that “it has really become something of a drone to read the many calls to maintain English in the teaching of Science and Mathematics in schools. The same goes for complaints over the lack of good command of English among Malaysians”.

The fact that there are “many calls to maintain English” in our teaching curriculum tells us something about the dire necessity in doing so. Sometimes, we have to face the harsh realities for us to remain competitive and survive in this world.

English is the language of international diplomacy; it facilitates an enormous ease in communication among the diverse world population. Roughly 85% of all knowledge in the world is available in English, more than twice that of any other language.

If you want to be an airline pilot, and fly international routes, you must know English. English is sought after as a second language more than any other language of the world. In fact, there are more people in China who speak English than in the US.

In many Commonwealth countries, English is the official language of the government because it is considered to be a vehicle of valuable neutral expression.

There are culturally no intertwined elements in the English language that require a learner to understand in order to be competent in the language.

The irony of English is that there is nothing about it that makes it intrinsically better than any other language. It is just a circumstance of history that turned it into what it is today. It is a fact of life in the world today that we have to accept in order to progress.

If not, we will be like a fish out of water when we go overseas for visits or attend international forums.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, speaking at the opening of the International Forum on the Creation of Global Citizens on Monday, said: “As Malaysian global citizens, the people must be increasingly globally aware. We need direct access through the best ideas from around the world so we can apply those ideas at home.”

Can the writer explain how we can achieve this if we ignore English as a medium of communication?

For good measure, Muhyiddin summed up: “I believe the future is now. We have to move ahead with the times if we do not want to be marginalized. We have to be in tune with the rest if we want to be the best.

“We must change our ways if we want to survive. We have to accept the fact that the borders are blurring and cultures are merging. We are part of globalization, for better or worse.”

Another View On PPSMI....

BASED on the Education Ministry’s Schedule for Policy Transition from PPSMI (Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English) to MBMMBI (Upholding Bahasa Malaysia and Strengthening the Command of English), Science and Mathematics will be taught solely in Bahasa Malaysia in all national primary and secondary schools by 2016.

However, students in Forms 6, matriculation and universities will study the two subjects in English as it is done now.

I find a serious mismatch here between students learning Science and Maths in Bahasa in secondary schools and potential Science and Maths teachers being trained in the two subjects in English in universities.

The Ministry is implementing its plan to have only graduate teachers in all secondary schools and according to the Schedule, all Science and Maths graduates would have studied the two subjects in English in Form 6, matriculation and university but they will go back to schools to teach the two subjects in Bahasa.

Are we not fitting square pegs into round holes as far as the language of instruction is concerned? Would their competency be compromised? Would we not be sacrificing on quality? This predicament will magnify itself after 2015.

The Schedule is consequential to the proposed policy change. It spells out the subsequent steps to follow in the years to come. But it cannot be right if there is an inherent fault in the policy change. As it is, it does not compute!

To remedy the mismatch, schools should be allowed the option to continue teaching Science and Maths in English at secondary level. This is the desire of many students and parents.

If we can have a budget by the people as proudly proclaimed by the Prime Minister, let’s also have an education system by the people.

Congratulation Cucu Tok Wan and -aa...

With the announcement of Budget 2011 by Cucu Tok Wan's Idol, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate him and -aa for getting special present from his idol which is
These are the example of consumer products which was given tax exempted in Budget 2010. You should know by yourself why the size is extra big, kah kah kah....

But most importantly is Cucu Tok Wan and -aa will be given a space to live as their second home in the new proposed 100 stories building to be built rather than building more houses for Malaysian. I hope to be invited by them during house warming session.

What A Joke...

This video really make me laugh.... On the other hand, this youngman knows about sale & purchase of property. I hope that he will be success in business for his ability to intercept malpractice in securing the said transaction.

This Is What I Feel Mr Cucu Tok Wan and -aa...

I REFER to the letter “What’s the criteria to assess an education policy?” (The Star, Oct 12) and I agree with the writer that six years is too short to determine that PPSMI is not suitable and call for its abolition.

As we are approaching 2012, the year that the Government will revert the teaching of Science and Mathematics to the Bahasa Malaysia medium, parents and students who wish to continue these two subjects in English are hoping for a miracle – that the Government will make a U-turn before it is too late.

Many parents have started looking for alternatives. Those who can afford to pay RM30,000 per year in school fees, are opting for international schools, others opt for private schools or studying in our neighbouring country. Some also choose home schooling which follows the overseas syllabus. In my case, The International School of Penang (Uplands) where my prince and princess are studying now.

This leaves only those who can’t afford expensive school fees especially Malays to turn to our local schools. If the school is the cradle to cultivate the 1Malaysia spirit, I can’t see how this can be done through so many different types of school and syllabuses.

Students have limited time to cope with so many subjects. They can’t afford to waste time doing translation. We must be clear that most of the books and materials related to these two subjects are available in English. If they are to be taught in bahasa kebangsaan, do we have a good books or materials translated in bahasa? I find it funny when translation been done to words such as joystick, mouse or even other science terms used world wide.

It's okey for you to compare with Japan who develops while using their mother-tongue but do you want to compare their attitude towards improving themselves. Don't run from the fact that Malay is the laziest race here, ok!

Our education system needs a change to provide the young generation a platform to compete with others in this globalised world, or we will see our children becoming “workers” for our neighbouring nations. Can KERAjaan able to create a job opportunity in their sector to all people namely Malays who are known for their poor English? Currently, the Malaysian education system does not have something interesting for student to attend. Compare with international school or other developed countries namely Japan, US etc.. student/pupils are crying if they cannot go to school and vise-versa here.

I believe the way to reach our Wawasan 2020 objective as a developed country lies in education. We were on the right track when PPSMI was implemented, so why are we killing the future of our nation and generations?

Simple answer is : Those who object PPSMI is selfish, stupid and never think of the future of their children.

Ringkasan Berita Menarik...

  4. Kenaikan harga rokok. Bagus ler tu kalau objektif kenaikan harga dapat dicapai. Jgn nanti rakyat tak merokok, KERAjaan pulak yg sakit sbb cukai rokok berkurangan.

Pictures Speak For Itself...

How um-NO Lembu Youth Wing Was Born?...

This is the e-mail I received about a story which is very toughing. Let's read it first.

One old man was sitting with his 25 years old son in th
e train. Train is about to leave the station. All the passengers are settling down into their seats. As the train started the young man was filled with a lot of joy and curiosity. He was sitting on the window side. He went out one hand and feeling the passing air. He shouted, "Papa see all the trees are going behind". Old man smile and admired his son's feelings. Beside the young man one couple was sitting and listing all the conversation between father and son. They were little awkward with the attitude of the 25 years old man behaving like a small child. Suddenly the young man again shouted, "Papa see the pond and animals. Clouds are moving with the train". Couple was watching the young man in embarrassingly. Now its start raining and some of water drops touches the young man's hand. He is filled with joy and he closed his eyes. He shouted again," Papa it's raining, water is touching me, see papa". Couple couldn't help themselves and ask the old man. Why don't you visit the Doctor and get your son treated. Old man said," Yes, We were from the hospital. Today my son got his eyes for the first time in his life".

Now, what can we learn from the above short story?

1. We must not come to any conclusion until we know all the facts
2. learn from the past, live in the present and work for the future

Therefore, these photos speak for itself.

Clearly a lie which there is a member of um-NO-ngok party lodging a police report.

Same person giving some donation/sponsorship but without any party lodging a police report for further investigation

Further reading on above story can be found here and here.

When we add all the photos above using mathematical analysis, the end result would be like this

What A Great Aidil Fitri Holidays...

Nothing is more interesting during recent Aidil Fitri long holidays other than visiting and receiving many relatives.

Tired? Yes but full of self-satisfaction. Happy to note that cousins, nephews and all those Pak-pak and Mak-mak Menakan still know each others.

The best part is a successful family gathering which was well planned since July 2010 in presence of my wife's family who come all the way from Sweden to join us. Thanks! Hope to join you during X'mas.

Korban? Plan to take 1 tompok for my only daughter.

Sapa Kata Judi Sukan Haram?...

Sports Toto brings gifts to children at hospital and welfare homes

In conjunction with the coming Hari Raya celebrations, Sports Toto reached out to about 300 people on separate occasions to spread the festive cheer.

An entourage of Sports Toto staff made a goodwill visit to the paediatric wards of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang and Hospital Sungai Buloh recently.

They had a light-hearted moment mingling with about 150 children in both hospitals and handed duit raya and gift packs to them. The children were visibly brightened up by the surprises despite being unwell.

Festive cheer: A group photo of all the invited guests with their goodies.

Thereafter, a breaking of fast was held in collaboration with Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort for about 150 underprivileged children and single mothers from Persatuan Anak-Anak Yatim Dan Ibu Tunggal Kg. Medan, PJ and Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim Miskin Daerah Kuala Langat, Banting.

Chartered buses were specially arranged to transport the invited guests to the Country Resort.

They were treated to a rare and exciting experience of horse-drawn carriage rides and poney rides around the scenic equestrian park, a sumptuous dinner, duit raya and gift packs plus entertainment by talented teen singer, Putri as well as some fun andgames with fabulous prizes.

Easing the pain: Sports Toto staff giving a gift pack to a child patient in Hospital Sungai Buloh.

The Raya charity programme has been listed in Sports Toto’s calendar of charitable causes for many years as it is part of the company’s tradition towards inculcating a sense of caring and sharing in the community.

Are You Patriotic Enough???...

Being patriotic is much more than flying the flag once a year but also gracious, charitable, neighborly, green, civic-conscious and many more.

How patriotic Malaysian when each time after the Ambang Merdeka Celebration, everybody t
hrow away the flags and people just simply walk on it? Make your time to Dataran Merdeka on this 30-8-10 & see for yourself.

This couple with transforming the flag into shirt and stuff like that? Definitely you have to cut and sew it again. Does this mean that you're so patriotic?

So, why making noise when not
many people raise additional flag in month of August? There are so many other ways to show your love to the country throughout the year.

Aku Dah Agak Dahhh...

  1. Di Selangor ngan isu pasir, akhirnya bila SPRM ngan Kerajaan Selangor buat JV cari pencuri sebenaq, ngan TV3suku tak siarkan berita ni dah.

Bijakk, bijakkk...

This Is The Motive Of Arm-NO Penang...

Some Muslims in Penang were highly agitated when the khatib ( the man who reads sermons) offered prayers for the Penang chief minister. In what manner was it said? Was LGE’s name mentioned in the context of something?

Actually we have not heard what actually transpired other than listening to a few emotionally charged statements from some people. Who are these people? If they are UMNO members, then their response was hardly surprising.

To me, the fearful responses thus far only reflect how desperate UMNO is in re capturing the Malay support in Penang. I won’t say re-capture Penang, because that is already impossible. what UMNO fears now is losing Malay support in Penang. That is like the end of the world.

What UMNO fears is a rising consciousness among Penang Malays that despite detaching themselves from UMNO, their lot can still be improved. This will be the beginning of a wider consciousness debunking the myth that equates loyalty and allegiance to this country to loyalty and allegiance to UMNO. The two things are not the same. If Penang is successful in demolishing this long perpetuated myth and this awareness becomes a national phenomenon, UMNO is in serious trouble.

Neither UMNO nor Zaid Hamidi who is the Pengerusi Perhubungan UMNO Penang have the answer to counter this rising tide. The only way they can hit back is by manipulating the sermon issue. You hope this will escalate into a tidal wave of resentment.

I say, if we truly love UMNO we should stop this childish and very shallow strategy. offer Penang Malays a better vision and promises of a better future. Zahid Hamidi is wishing he is not the Pengerusi Perhubungan UMNO Negeri. Ini kes nyaya kat chek no.

Since capturing Penang from Gerakan and UMNO in the last elections, the state government has made serious inroads into winning the hearts and minds of the Muslim community. Mosques and suraus have been receiving a lot of facilities and assistance from the state government. What is the civil thing to do if someone has given you assistance? You say thank you sir.

So the particular imam who created the present controversy who happens to be the brother of the Penang mufti was telling the congregation that Muslims should pray the good deeds undertaken by the state government under Lim Guan Eng are carried out continuously. Muslims are thanking the state government under LIM Guan Eng. In addition, Muslims should be hopeful that Lim Guan Eng embraces Islam. What probably happened was perhaps Guan Eng’s name was mentioned in that context.

To me, this is a stupid way of trying to leverage on a religious issue. The present controversy serves to further expose our hypocrisy. For so many years while Penang was under the JV government of Gerakan and UMNO, the lot of Penang Malays has not improved greatly. You even had a PM from Penang and he didn’t achieve anything much for Penang Malays. He could offer only some nebulous ideas about Islam. People wanted more physical improvements not more sermonizing.

Before that you also had a former deputy PM from Penang, who did not achieve much either. All he could do was gurmal here and gurmal there. Senator Koh Tsu Koon could never match what Guang Eng has achieved in 2 years with what he has done all those years while in power. So really, you don’t have any defense against what the present state government is doing.

The better action by Penang Malays is to throw out all those useless UMNO leaders who rose to prominence not through offering great ideas and thinking, but got where they are by mastering political intrigues. It’s the comeuppance for many of these hollow leaders. For years you have come up not through the brilliance of your ideas or competency but you rise because you are more skillful at demolishing your political rivals, you rise by stabbing the backs of your political comrades, you rise because you plot here and there- suddenly you find you don’t have the substance to sustain your political relevance.

So you have incompetent UMNO leaders thinking they can stand toe to toe with better qualified Gerakan leaders. Suddenly you realize, your skills in removing your own political comrades don’t work when dealing with people from other parties.

So I find the Penang UMNO leadership and its ‘spokesmen’ behaving hypocritical in using religion to counter the state government.

Let’s have some finesse fellers.
