Make Teaching of English A National Mission...

DESPITE the Government’s new policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malay-sia, it is nevertheless giving a lot of push and thrust to improve English teaching methods and standards. But sadly, at school level, it is not being followed and implemented.

My friend's daughter studies in a secondary school popularly known as SMKDPT Masai, a premier school where all the 5As, 6As and 7As students from the nearby primary schools are placed.

Being a premier school and having all the top students from the schools around this area, the school has to set a high standard of teaching in English, but it is not so.

The teachers, including the Guru Besar, do not utter a single word in English even to a person like my friend who does not know Bahasa Malaysia. He is an Indian expatriate.

I completed Standard 1 to Higher Secondary (here it is called SPM) in Bahasa Melayu. But our English language syllabus was so strong, with two papers, one specifically in gram-mar. Additional paper was English 1119.

Due to the strength of the English language syllabus and the tea-ching methods employed, I could easily acquire proficiency in English when I reached engineering college and join the military.

Governments may come out with a good education policy, but the success of the policy depends on the implementation at grassroots, largely on the Gurus Besar.

If the Government really wants to improve the standard of English, the Gurus Besar have to be trained first and they will automatically lead the team of teachers under them to the successful implementation of government policy.

But to cover up their weakness, or lack of affinity or proficiency in English, these teachers simply put the blame on the children from the rural or poor families.

I am from a poor family in a rural area, my mother is illiterate and my father a government servant who speak little English.

How could I acquire proficiency in English? It was because of the encouragement by my parents, teachers and my willingness to learn.

The Gurus Besar of all schools in Malaysia can do well to look at Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has a good command of English despite being from a rural family. He mesmerized the Europeans and Ameri-cans when introducing the Multi-media Super Corridor.

If a person is good in communication skills, he/she is already 50% successful in his/her career. In this aspect, I am saddened whenever I interview Malaysian engineering graduates for industrial training or for a job.

They are good and intelligent in their Engineering subjects, but they cannot express and explain due to lack of proficiency in English. When they write a report, it confuses; I do not know whether he/she is explaining yesterday’s or today’s or tomorrow’s event as there is no grammar in their writing. How can these engineers submit a research paper in an international forum?

All Gurus Besar have to take up the development of English language skills among their students as a national mission.

In India, in order of respect, Indian place Guru (Teacher) one place above God and just two places below Matha (Mother) and Pitha (Father). God only creates human beings, but the Guru moulds the human being into a good human being.

If & Only If You're Thinking The Future Of Your Children...

As parents we all know how important the English language is to our children’s future. We also know that without mastering the English language, it will be hard for our children to find a good paying job in the private sector.

We don’t expect all our children to only apply for government jobs.

Big multinational companies will pay high ranking workers a good salary only if they have a good grasp of the English language.

There is nothing wrong at all if one is good in both English and Bahasa Malaysia. I would want my child to master the English language and at the same time have a good command of Bahasa Malaysia.

I hope the Education Minister will bring back English-medium schools, which were around till the early 90s. Forget about pressure from those members of Perkasa or Malay political party. This people never think about the future of their children. We will respect you more if you can uphold the power entrusted on you. We are not a LAZY Malay like those people. They want to be lembu, let them be. Don't drag us too. Give option for the young student an option to determine their future.

In urban areas and big towns there are private schools that use English as a medium of instruction. The sad thing is not many parents can afford to send their children to such expensive private schools.

This chimp is laughing seeing the people saying

"you're not patriotic or Malaysian enough"
"because you speak in English"

I AGREE with “English holds the key to achieving Vision 2020” (The Star, March 21). English is one of the most vital languages – it’s global, and will ensure we move ahead as a respected nation.

It’s almost ridiculous, this unnecessary bickering over mastering English. It’s not a matter of need or otherwise, it’s a vital element, be it for employment or daily interaction.

English will enable us to face the globalized world. Imagine us in Vision 2020 minus English proficiency. We could well become the laughing stock of other nations.

We can improve our level of English not only through the education system, but also by reading newspapers and magazines in English, blogging in English and conversing in English whenever and wherever we can.

The keyword of the day is self-improvement.

I remember, during my school days, most of my schoolmates could not string a proper sentence together in English. I was teased. Now I wonder how my former schoolmates are faring in life.

Our mother tongue has always been there, we will still practice our native language, but in this world we have to be at least on par with other developed nations. We would not want to be left behind.

Speaking English can never make one less patriotic or less Malaysian.

Who Tarnished Your Image???...

When some group hold a demonstration demanding Anwar to surrender his DNA, they are not being "touched" by the police. However, when there was a group who also holding a demonstration but to counter-back the latter group, they were "touched" by the police.

Why this double standard happened in this so-called 1Malaysia?

How to blame the police who only doing their job as per instruction from their superior? Just like in military, they were trained to follow orders.

Now, it is crystal clear that the good image of police is being tarnished not by themselves but by those politicians.

So, if you want to release your anger to the police, punish those politicians by ensuring their lost in next general election.

How To Be Thankful...

Someone ask me whether I'm still in service.
If he read my profile, that someone is so stupid to understand it.

Someone ask me whether I receive a pension or not.
So what, whether I receive it or not, what seem to bother that someone. People receive pension because they are entitle to it. Maybe he is so envy for not getting the pension.

Someone ask me to leave this country for not being thankful (bersyukur) to the KERAjaan.
I hope that someone can tell me how to be thankful to KERAjaan otherwise he needs to leave this country too.

  • Does criticizing your KERAjaan and the corrupted leaders for their wrong-doing is considered NOT BEING THANKFUL?
  • Does having a firm stand in protecting our rights is considered NOT BEING THANKFUL?

Oppsss, acting like a cow to agree on everything that is wrong is considered BEING THANKFUL.

I'm so sorry to that
someone for being so naive in politic which has 1001 kind of perception. I rephrase it... Politic is about perception. Or maybe he has some kind of mental problem till his ability to think and make a conclusion has gone. Or maybe he is too blind to see what is happening around him. Or may be he is in denial syndrome without realizing it.

And that someone is... jeng jengg jenggg!!!

What Say You???...

I do not want to comment further but the statement made by Tun Dr. Mahathir as published in The Star as copied & pasted below speaks for itself.

Therefore, for those members in Malay political party whose name is still in English but "kecoh pasal bahasa kebangsaan" what say you?....

SUBANG JAYA: Mastering the English language will not make one less patriotic, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

“This is the reality we have to face if we want to build the nation towards becoming a developed nation.

“If we decide to learn Science and Mathematics in English, it does not mean we are less patriotic,” he said in his keynote address at the Biotechnology Forum 2011 on “Past Wisdom For Future Direction” here yesterday.

He added that the field of science, with its numerous research and inventions, produced hundreds of research papers and books which were all in English.

Dr Mahathir also said that mastering English was very important “because those who don’t understand English would lose out.”

Last year, the Government announced that it would revert the teaching medium for Science and Mathematics to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools, and Mandarin or Tamil in vernacular schools from this year.

This came about after the abolishment of the policy of teaching the two subjects in English. — Bernama
